Embracing the Prophets!

Would you rather make bricks for Pharaoh or duke it out with God? Walter Brueggemann thinks that's our choice!

Canterbury@ULM will begin our study of "Embracing the Prophets," featuring Brueggemann teaching first, then engaging in discussion of the teaching with a small group. The video portion of the study is designed to be shown in two parts, first the teaching for 10-12 minutes, then a pause for our own brief discussion, then their discussion for 12-15 minutes, followed by our own discussion using the materials in the workbook.

So... meet me tomorrow in the SUB food court to purchase our lunch. I'll be there around 11:45. Then we're going to the COMM conference room on the first floor of Walker, where I will have everything set up.

We do have a couple of "business" items to discuss while we eat, then we will plunge into our study and plan to adjourn no later than 1:30 p.m.

See you Friday!

New Meeting Time!

Friday, 12 Noon
Food Court, SUB

I will get to the SUB by about 11:45 to wait for you at a table across from Einstein's. I'm going to try letting everyone pick what they want to eat and I'll come around and pay for it, then we'll go to our meeting room, which I hope will again be Student Center 163.

We'll begin with Noonday Prayer, which only takes a few minutes, so our food will be fine! I'll lead this week, but I want others to step up to the plate and take turns leading. Rather than have everybody worry about bringing prayer books, I'll print some copies of Noonday Prayer for us to use.

Our first meeting will be devoted to discussion of objectives, opportunities and plans for the semester. I have ordered study materials and if they come in time, we'll look them over briefly but won't start our real study until next week.

See you Friday!!

Fun in NOLA!

Our last adventure in NOLA was the Joan of Arc parade that kicks off Carnival. It was educational, too, but it was a lot of fun. I took photos with my phone and uploaded them to Google+, and Google+ made a story out of them. Click here to see it.

Learning in NOLA!

Canterbury@ULM spent Monday with Fr. Walter Baer touring the city and learning about how the city flooded after Katrina and new flood protection still under construction. We saw rebuilding, but we also saw empty slabs and lots and even a few boarded up homes that have not been touched since Katrina.

About to leave the Five Continents B&B where we had Morning Prayer and breakfast.

What could be more fun than an original-architecture McDonald's?!
That little patch of fresh concrete wall marks the 17th St. Canal levee break that flooded the center of the city, all the way from Lake Pontchartrain to the edge of the French Quarter--7 miles.
On the lake end of the 17th St. Canal levee, a new flood wall structure prevents high water from entering the mouth of the canal. The horizontal smoke stacks on the left are for a row of giant Caterpillar engines that lower the flood wall to block the openings across the lake end of the canal.

Hard at work in NOLA!

We spent the morning weeding and raking the neighborhood playground built by Church of the Annunciation on Claiborne Ave.
